June 22-30, 2018 (tentative)
LEO's St. Francis Greenwood, Mississippi mission is an 8 day excursion into the Delta of Mississippi, one of the poorest areas in the United States. Primarily the mission consist of holding a 4 day summer exploration program for children in pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. Our programs change from year to year, but some constants are: music, a self-contained pre-K program for students entering Kindergarten in the upcoming school year, some type of remedial work, as well as some arts/crafts type classes.
The students are provided transportation to St. Francis School where classes are held in an air conditioned setting. Students are fed a light breakfast to start off their day and are later provided with a full "school lunch". Students also partake in recess during their lunch time. On Thursday evening, parents and parishioners are treated to a music program produced during the student's music time. This is a great time of sharing talents as well as sharing what happened during their four days at Discovery Zone.
Another aspect of the mission is providing a "Wisconsin Style Brat Fry" for all parishioners after all Masses on the Sunday we arrive. This is a great time to spend with folks from the local community as well as orient ourselves to the local culture. If the size of the mission team permits, some folks have lent their skills in service projects around the parish.
Our typical day runs from wake-up around 6:00 AM, arrival at school around 7:45, with the school day ending around 3-3:30 PM. We pray in the morning and evening and folks can attend daily Mass as well. Meal are cooked by assigned participants and snacks are brought and shared. The evenings can be spent relaxing or experiencing the great cuisine found only in the south. It is not uncommon for some sharing of libations after work.
Accommodations currently are in a lofted Lodge with 6 bedrooms and 6+ bathrooms and a dorm-style loft. The Lodge is very comfortable, completely air conditioned, and situtuated on about 500 acres of privacy.
The St. Francis mission is an affordable introduction ($225? all expenses) to mission work. We carpool the 15 hours to and from Greenwood. People of many different backgrounds and talents have traveled with us. Folks 18 years and older are welcome to join us. We pride ourselves in being an ecumenical organization, although one must note that Our Sunday worship will be the Catholic Liturgy.

St. Francis of Assisi School
The purpose of St. Francis of Assisi School is to provide quality Catholic education to the children of the area, independent of the family’s income, ethnic background, religious practices, or political involvement. The school has been, from its conception, a viable alternative and option of quality education for all who wish to come.
Its first year of operation was in 1951 and today the school continues to serve the black population of Greenwood, plus a new ethnic group to the area, the Hispanic population. One of the school's goals is to reflect a more pluralistic view of society with students of all races, ethnic backgrounds and religion.
